Dr. Anthony J. Bittman
December 27, 1930 - December 11, 2008
Dr. Anthony J. Bittman passed away peacefully on December 11, 2008 in Savannah with his loving wife of 56 years, Emily, at his side.
Dr. Bittman was a respected and beloved dentist and resident of Western Springs, IL for 30 years before moving to The Landings in Savannah, GA in 1989. Dr. and Mrs. Bittman were the first residents to move to the Marshes of Skidaway Island in May, 2005. Tony played first chair violin in the orchestra at Morton High School. He was an Eagle Scout and remained involved in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America for many years, serving as a Cub Scout leader. Dr. Bittman attended the University of Illinois and Loyola Dental School where he was a member of the graduating class of 1955. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1955-1957. He was a member of the Chicago Dental Society, the Village Club and Masonic Lodge of Western Springs and was a past president of the Far West Dental Study Club. He enjoyed sailing and participated in the Chicago to Mackinac Yacht race with his good friends and sons. While enjoying his retirement in Savannah, Dr Bittman was a member of the Landings Yacht Club, he was the Ambassador to the Czech Sailing team for the 1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, a member of the First Responders of Skidaway Island, and active in Kiwanis. He especially enjoyed dancing with Emily, as well as their amicable bridge partnership. Dr. Bittman was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Blanche Bittman and granddaughter Emily Asli Kandemir.
In addition to his wife Emily, survivors include his son Anthony Joseph Bittman, Jr. Lorraine, Cheryl Vander Biezen Terry, Barbara Kandemir Emre and Charles Bittman; 8 grandchildren; Lise Cochran Justin, Rebecca Keller Kevin, Samantha Bittman, Adam Vander Biezen, Teoman Kandemir, Anthony Joseph Bittman III and Emily Grace Bittman. He is also survived by his sisters Sheila Wells William and Christine Latta Charles.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14th in the Island Club Ballroom at the Marshes of Skidaway Island, 95 Skidaway Island Park Road, Savannah, GA.
Subsequently, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2008 in the Hippach Memorial Chapel at the Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, 17 w 201 Roosevelt Road, Oak Brook Terrace, IL. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be may be made to the Salvation Army.
